The assassination of Lincoln a Catholic plot?

April 14, 1865, while watching a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theater with his wife, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated from a gunshot wound to the back of the head at point-blank range by John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln had recently won reelection to a second term of office and had helped lead the north to victory in the Civil War.

Since his death, many conspiracy theories have abounded including this one which claims that the Catholic Church was part of a great conspiracy to kill Lincoln. The theory as proposed by Emmett McLoughlin and others is that the Roman Catholic Church had reason to hate Abraham Lincoln. This is based on Lincoln's legal defense of a former Priest against the Bishop of Chicago. This theory is further enhanced by the fact that a Catholic John H. Surratt, the son of Mary Surratt, fled America and ended up in the Vatican. The Surratts were Catholic.

However, the evidence connecting Pope Pius IX with the assassination is dubious. Mary Surratt was the first woman executed in the United States for her supposed conexion with the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. So possibly there was a conspiracy against Catholics.

This being the day after Aprils Fools day I thought I would post this foolishness.
