The Chouans, Jean Chouan, the Catholic and Royal Army and the fall of Napoléon

Catherine Delors explains the word "Chouan". more...

I have always been taught that Chouan meant Screech Owl, which is appropriate. If you have ever been in the woods at night and been swooped on by an owl you would know why they chose that name.

Certainly, Richard, "chouan" is a deformation of "chat-huant" screech owl. This may very well be the origin of Jean Chouan's nickname (because he was traveling by night, or because he used a similar cry to communicate with his comrades...) It then spread to the entire movement.
And many thanks for the link!
