Valkrye

This weekend I went to see the much advertised Valkyre, starring Tom Cruise. I had hoped for better. Being a Catholic and familiar with the story of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg I saw none of the torment that he felt in making his decision to commit tyrannicide. As many officers Von Stauffenburg originally was a supporter of the Nazis and Hitler in particular. As the war progressed and he realized he was a part of a giant killing machine he grew disenchanted.

The film begins with Von Stauffenburg in Africa, disputing with a General over an order received for an advance. As the scene progresses he is tragically wounded by British aircraft strafing his troops. His wounds require that he be returned to Germany to recover.

Von Stauffenburg did not enter into his attempted tyrannicide easily. His Catholic and German upbringing meant that violating his oath, even to one as evil as Hitler, difficult to accept. As Charlotte Corday did more than 100 years earlier he studied the writings of Catholic theologians. He finally arrived at the decision that in order to save the many he must do away with Hitler. this action involved treason.

Of course this film did not show any of the moral troubling of Von Stauffenburg.Tom Cruise created a mere shadow of Von Stauffenburg, he has no substance. Perhaps this film is a passive restatement of his own self. This Von Stauffenburg is a Scientologist. There is no forethought, no moral dilemma, no doubts, Tom Cruise has remade Von Stauffenburg in his own image and likeness. This is a World war II version of Mission Impossible. It failed miserably with me. Tom Cruise did not command my respect and disrespected the memory of Von Stauffenburg.

I probably should have watched Despereaux instead...

NOTE: I should probably take a minute to say what an oath is and why not breaking one is important. When a person takes and oath he calls God to be his witness and vouch for the truthfulness of a statement or a promise. That is why breaking an oath is bad. If we break an oath we make a liar out of God by our actions.
A vow on the other hand is a promise made to God, breaking one's vows mean that we break a promise made to God. Marriage is one example of a vow, the religious life is another.
People in this age of "Rationalization" hold little stock in Oaths and vows. That is probably why so many couples who are going to be married write prenuptial agreements, they have no faith in their ability to keep a vow or be true to an oath.

Peruvian Jesus born to Virgin Mary on Christmas

Don't be confused by this next article. I was taken aback for a second. Good name for this baby...

Twenty-year-old Huarcaya, … LIMA (Reuters) – Virgin Mary, a 20-year-old Peruvian woman, gave birth to a baby boy on Christmas day and named him Jesus, Peru's state news agency said on Friday.

The baby's father, Adolfo Jorge Huamani, 24, is a carpenter. Religious Peruvians compared him to Joseph the Carpenter in the Bible.

"Two thousand years later the story of Bethlehem is relived," read the headline about the birth in El Comercio, the main newspaper in Peru, a predominantly Catholic country.

The mother, Virgen Maria Huarcaya, delivered the 7.7 pound (3.5 kg) boy, Jesus Emanuel, in the early hours of Christmas at the central maternity hospital in Lima, the capital.

"A few days ago we had decided to name my son after a professional soccer player," the father said. "But thanks to a happy coincidence this is how things ended up."

Virgen Maria Huarcaya holds her baby son named Jesus, in Lima December 25, 2008.

Feast of the Holy Family

Our Priest delivered a powerful homily yesterday on the feast of the Holy Family. God suprises us in some ways I think. From age to age he has constructed vignettes from which we may derive knowledge.

Fr Silvio's point was this: the family is a domestic parish. Because it is a domestic parish to grow it must consist of a father, a mother, and children. The domestic parish is a microcosm of the church community and therefore those things which occur at the parish must also occur in the home. Prayer and the scripture must be taught and said. A idealisation of community must be fostered and allowed to grow. In the family and in the parish we have the mission to evangelize and teach the faith. As Christians we must conform ourselves as closely as possible to the example set by Joseph, Mary and Jesus. There are those who would have us think that a deviation from this example is equal to if not superiour than that of the Holy Family. They are wrong precisely because they fail to follow a model which was conceived (for lack of a better term) by God.

This is why I stated that God has constructed this vignette of the Holy Family for the Sunday after Christmas. It shows that while the ministry of Christ began at a wedding it was already well underway at his birth.

Ugandan army says rebels kill 45 people in Congo church

KAMPALA (AFP) – The Ugandan army on Sunday accused Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels of hacking to death 45 people in a church in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

An aid official speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity confirmed Friday's massacre, saying the killings took place in a Catholic church in the Doruma area, around 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Sudanese border.

"There are body parts everywhere. Inside the church, the entrance and in the church compound," the aid official said.

"We got information the rebels cut 45 people into pieces," added army spokesman Captain Chris Magezi.

"They were cut with pangas (machetes) and hit with clubs but some luckily managed to escape. Our forces came to know about the killings while pursuing the LRA yesterday (Saturday) and the pursuit is on for the killers."

Magezi said the victims, mostly women, children and the elderly, were mutilated in the style used by Hutu extremists during the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Magezi later said 13 of the insurgents were shot dead by the forces.

"We came in contact with the group that killed the civilians in the church near Doruma. We put 13 of them out action and we recovered from them nine sub-machine guns," he said. "We are pursuing the rest of the group."

Forces from Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and south Sudan launched a joint operation against the Ugandan LRA rebels in northeastern DR Congo earlier this month.

The vice-governor of Orientale province, Joseph Bangakya Angaze, told AFP by telephone that "fighting has broken out around Doruma since Friday, between elements of the LRA and local groups" set up to defend their communities.

Magezi had also accused the rebels of killing 35 civilians in attacks on Wednesday and Thursday in areas in south Sudan and northeastern DR Congo.

But LRA spokesman David Nyekorach Matsanga denied the rebels were behind any of the killings.

"Reports about the LRA killing innocent civilians is another propaganda campaign by the Uganda army," Matsanga told AFP.

"I am not a military spokesman for the LRA but I have it on good authority from the field commanders that the LRA is not in those areas where the killings are reported to have taken place.

"We need an independent verification to know who is responsible for these killings in Doruma because LRA has stated before we want peace not war because fighting won't help," he said.

The two sides have been engaged in peace talks led by the government of South Sudan for more than two years.

On Saturday Matsanga said the LRA chief Joseph Kony was still open to talks but preferred Tanzanian or South African mediation because south Sudan was involved in the military offensive.

Kony has repeatedly refused to sign a peace deal with Kampala because of International Criminal Court arrest warrants against him and his lieutenants for war crimes.

But Magezi insisted the killings of civilians will not deter the joint forces from hunting the rebels. He also condemned "these heinous acts by the LRA terrorists."

"They (LRA) think by killing innocent civilians the allied forces will be intimidated to back off from the operation. They are misleading themselves," said Magezi, who is also the spokesman of the regional forces.

"We will continue to pursue them and they will pay with their blood."

Uganda has already signed the final peace agreement concluded in April to end the civil conflict that has ravaged the country's northern region.

Kony's rebels are accused of having raped and mutilated civilians, forcibly enlisting child soldiers and of massacring thousands during two decades of conflict.

Kony, a semi-literate former altar boy, took charge in 1988 of a regional rebellion among northern Uganda's ethnic Acholi minority.

LRA From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), is a rebel sectarian guerrilla army operating mainly in northern Uganda and parts of Sudan. It is designated a terrorist organization by The United States Department of State.

The group was formed in 1987 and is engaged in an armed rebellion against the Ugandan government in what is now one of Africa's longest-running conflicts. It is led by Joseph Kony, who proclaims himself the "spokesperson" of God and a spirit medium, primarily of the Christian Holy Spirit which the Acholi believe can represent itself in many manifestations. The group claims to be establishing a theocratic state based on the Ten Commandments and Acholi tradition. The LRA is accused of widespread human rights violations, including murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement of women and children, and forcing children to participate in hostilities
.

May God acept these 45 as Martyrs to the Faith.
